The King's Foundation
Building A Legacy
The King's Foundation is creating beautiful communities for a more sustainable world.
The brief
The King’s Foundation’s Building a Legacy network has the goal of creating communities for a more sustainable world by promoting an alternative to the traditional way of building housing estates.
With this film it wanted to show that ‘legacy development’ is very achievable - it works for people and places, both now and into the future.
The charity wanted an awareness film that explains the unique approach it takes. It is being used on The King's Foundation's website and was premiered on 24 September 2024 at the ‘Building a Legacy’ annual event, shown during the evening at the awards ceremony.
The film needed to explain how The King's Foundation works with landowners to create developments that champion sustainability, benefit existing communities, and create new projects which are more environmentally, creatively, socially and economically progressive than those in more traditional housing developments. It needed to communicate that ‘legacy development’ is very achievable - it works for people and for place, both now and for the future.
The approach
To create the film, our crew more or less ‘moved in’ to two of the developments: Poundbury in Dorset and Tournagrain near Inverness, for several days, so that they could embed themselves in the community. We wanted to show what it’s genuinely like to live there, so they recorded over 30 local people sharing their thoughts and captured many hours of footage of the locally distinctive architecture and community enhancing spaces.
In the final edit, we included a rich mix of talking head testimonials, expert opinion of landowners, estate managers, and experts who helped shape the developments, vox pops and cinematic b-roll footage, all of which was filmed in the two community locations. The footage speaks to the vibrant, diverse communities, craftsmanship, healthy ecosystems and green, well used and landscaped spaces. Drone shots help to locate the developments within their wider landscape and make visual reference to the layout planning of these communities.
To quote Ben Bolgar, Executive Director, at The King’s Foundation:
“The legacy landowner movement could restore that balance with nature to make beautiful places that future generations will be proud of.”
